At Riviera Aesthetic, we meet many clients seeking the secret to a perfectly even complexion. While "glass skin" is the trend, the reality for many is hyperpigmentation—those stubborn dark spots, sun damage, and patches that seem to resist every over-the-counter fix.
As medical aestheticians, we understand that pigmentation is complex. It isn’t just a surface issue; it’s a biological response happening deep within your skin. The key to treating it effectively is to understand its origin and deploy professional-grade tools.
Here is a look at what hyperpigmentation is, why it happens, and the advanced solutions we use at Riviera to restore your skin's natural radiance.
Hyperpigmentation is a broad medical term used to describe areas of the skin that become darker in color than the surrounding skin. It can affect any skin type and appear anywhere on the body, though it’s most common on sun-exposed areas like the face, neck, chest, and hands.
It manifests in several common forms:
Sun Spots (Solar Lentigines): These flat, brown spots are caused by chronic sun exposure and are common as we age.
Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH): This occurs after the skin is injured or inflamed (e.g., from acne, eczema, or a cut). It appears as red, brown, or black spots where the lesion was.
Melasma: This form is often linked to hormonal changes (common during pregnancy or with birth control) and presents as larger, symmetrical patches of darkening, typically on the face.
The story of hyperpigmentation centers on melanin, the pigment that gives our skin, hair, and eyes their color. Melanin is produced by specialized cells called melanocytes, which live in the lower layers of the epidermis.
Melanin’s primary job is protection. When your skin is exposed to triggers—especially UV radiation (sun), inflammation, or hormonal fluctuations—it goes into overdrive. Melanocytes are stimulated to produce an excess amount of melanin, which is then transferred to the surface skin cells.
Essentially, hyperpigmentation is an "overprotective" response by your skin, depositing clusters of pigment to guard against further damage. To fix it, we must correct this biological signal and safely lift the existing pigment.
Treating hyperpigmentation requires a multi-faceted approach. We focus on fading current spots, preventing new ones, and inhibiting the process of overproduction. To do this, we pair the elite Glymed Plus line with advanced clinical devices.
At Riviera, we believe your professional treatments are only as good as your home care. We recommend and use the clinical-grade Glymed Plus line, which features products specifically formulated to target pigmentation. These products are crucial because they act as "tyrosinase inhibitors"—compounds that legally "turn off" the enzyme (tyrosinase) that signals melanocytes to make pigment.
Professional Chemical Peels: In the treatment room, we use professional-strength Glymed Plus chemical peels. Peels utilize gentle exfoliating acids to rapidly accelerate skin cell turnover. This process allows us to safely and effectively shed the top layers of the epidermis, lifting the accumulated hyperpigmentation to reveal new, unaffected skin beneath. Depending on your skin, we choose from various types, like lactic, glycolic, salicylic acid, or TCA to find the perfect strength for you.
For deeper or more stubborn pigmentation, we turn to laser technology. We are proud to use the Glownar Onyx IPL system.
How IPL Works:Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) isn't strictly a laser; it uses a broad spectrum of light. The light from the handpiece is specifically absorbed by the excess melanin in the dark spot, converting to heat and "shattering" the pigment without harming the surrounding skin.
The Result:After a Glownar Onyx IPL session, the treated pigment will typically darken and then naturally flake off over the next 1–2 weeks. It is incredibly effective for sun damage, age spots, and rosacea, evening out the complexion beautifully.
You don't have to accept dark spots as a permanent part of your skin. A clear, luminous complexion is achievable, but it requires a customized plan. As medical aestheticians, we can assess your specific type of hyperpigmentation and design a series of chemical peels and Glownar Onyx IPL sessions—complemented by a Glymed Plus home regimen—to get you the results you deserve.
